By 1663 it was clear to King Louis XIV that his colony in New France was not growing quickly enough. There were few marriageable women; the population of New France was largely male. The men could have married native women, but they did not, even though for a time they were encouraged to do so by the Catholic church. Respectable women had to be brought from France, then.
